Babies outgrow a size every six to eight weeks, so almost every parent ends up buying from several brands. No single label does everyday basics, sleepwear, and gift pieces equally well.
So rather than one undifferentiated ranking, this guide is grouped by what you’re shopping for: budget basics, certified organic, bamboo sleepwear, or something for a shower gift. Start with the comparison table, then jump to the category that matches your priority.
How we put this list together
Each brand was assessed against the same four questions:
- Fabric and certification: Is there a named, verifiable certification, GOTS, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, or just unverified “eco-friendly” language?
- Fit for purpose: Everyday basics, sleepwear, and occasion pieces are different jobs. Few brands do all three well.
- Price-to-quality: What you’re actually paying for at each price point.
- Range and sizing: How long you can stay with one brand before ageing out of it.
We haven’t lab-tested garments, and we’re not claiming to have. This is a structured comparison of publicly available information, fabric composition, certification, price, and size range as published by each brand.
Certifications: what GOTS and OEKO-TEX actually mean
|
Certification |
What it covers |
What it doesn’t |
|
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) |
Organic fiber content plus processing, chemical inputs, and labor standards across the supply chain |
Doesn’t apply to bamboo viscose (see below) |
|
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 |
Tests the finished garment for harmful substances. Class 1 is the strictest tier, for products intended for babies and toddlers |
Says nothing about organic growing or labor practices |
|
Fair Trade / B Corp |
Labor practices and supply chain ethics |
Not a fabric safety standard |
One thing worth knowing before you shop: bamboo fabric cannot be GOTS certified. GOTS classifies bamboo viscose as a regenerated cellulose fiber rather than a natural one, and caps regenerated fibers at 10% of a certified product, while requiring at least 70% organic natural fiber. The arithmetic makes a mostly-bamboo garment ineligible by definition.
So if you see a GOTS logo on a bamboo product, the certification is covering something else: a blended fabric, a facility, or a separate cotton line. For bamboo, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 is the meaningful certification, and it’s the one to look for.

Before you buy sleepwear: the flammability label
This trips up a lot of first-time parents. Under CPSC rules, children’s sleepwear in sizes above 9 months must be either flame resistant or snug-fitting. Snug-fitting garments carry a required tag reading “Wear snug-fitting. Not flame resistant.”
That label is not a warning about a defect. It’s the expected label on close-fitting cotton and bamboo viscose sleepwear, which is most of what the bamboo brands below sell. The snug fit is itself the safety feature, which is also why sleepwear shouldn’t be sized up.
Loose-fitting garments sold as sleepwear in those sizes do have to be flame resistant, which usually means a treated synthetic. Knowing this makes the labels on the brands below read very differently.

Best Value
1. Carter's

A first-wardrobe staple for generations of American parents, built on range and price rather than trend. The breadth of prints and sizes makes multipacks an easy way to stock up, and basics start around $8–$10 with multipacks offering the best per-item value.
Fabric: cotton blends. Ages: preemie–5T. Best for: stocking up on everyday basics cheaply.
Want to compare fit and comfort across styles? Check our ultimate guide to choosing comfortable & stylish baby outfits.
2. Primary

Primary’s whole proposition is the absence of things — no logos, no licensed characters, just plain organic cotton basics in a wide color range. That makes it a practical pick for hand-me-downs between siblings and for gifting when you don’t know the baby’s gender, since nothing dates or looks specifically “for” one child.
It closes the gap between affordable and certified organic about as well as anything on this list, at roughly $14–$28 per piece.
Fabric: organic cotton. Ages: newborn–12 years. Best for: minimal, mix-and-match wardrobes.
Best certified organic
3. Burt's Bees Baby

One of the earlier mainstream brands to commit to GOTS-certified organic cotton, and widely available at major retailers, which makes it an easy registry pick. The range centers on bodysuits, sleepers, and layering basics.
Fabric: GOTS organic cotton. Ages: newborn–24M. Price: ~$14–$30
4. L'ovedbaby

Woman-owned and family-run, making GOTS organic cotton since 2004. The range runs preemie through 5T, which is unusually wide at the small end — genuinely useful if you need preemie sizing, which many organic brands skip.
Fabric: GOTS organic cotton. Ages: preemie–5T. Price: ~$20–$40.
5. Monica + Andy

Best known for its “Coming Home” sets, which pair certified organic fabric with gift presentation — a combination that’s rarer in the newborn category than you’d expect. Worth considering if you’re buying for someone else rather than yourself.
Fabric: GOTS organic cotton. Ages: newborn–4T. Price: ~$22–$48.

Best Bamboo and Sleepwear
Bamboo viscose has become the default for babies who run warm or have sensitive skin. A note on the fabric itself: it’s a regenerated fiber, chemically processed from bamboo pulp, which is why it’s correctly labeled “viscose made from bamboo” rather than simply “bamboo.” The finished fabric is genuinely soft, drapey, and breathable.
6. Kyte Baby

Something of a cult brand among parents of newborns, largely on the strength of the zipper footies — a two-way zip makes a 3 a.m. change meaningfully faster, and that’s the detail people stay for.
Fabric: viscose from bamboo. Ages: newborn–4T. Price: ~$25–$42.
More options in our roundup of the best baby zipper footies for newborns and infants in the USA.
7. Angel Dear

Extends bamboo beyond sleepwear into daytime basics, at a slightly lower price point than the sleep-focused bamboo brands. A reasonable entry point if you want the fabric without committing to pajama prices.
Fabric: viscose from bamboo. Ages: newborn–4T. Price: ~$18–$32.
8. Little Sleepies

Notable for its stretch fabric and for the size range — newborn through 14Y, plus adult sizes for family matching. Fewer size changes are a real saving over time. The brand also makes pet bandanas in prints that match its pajamas.
Fabric: viscose from bamboo. Ages: newborn–14Y. Price: ~$24–$44.

Also in this category: our own bamboo range, zipper footies, rompers and two-piece sets in viscose made from bamboo, newborn through 36 months. Full details in our entry below, listed separately because we publish this guide.
Best for gifting and occasions
9. Hanna Andersson

The striped pajamas are the signature, and they hold up well enough to be passed between siblings — unusual in a category built around rapid outgrowing. Sizes run newborn through 14Y, including adult sizes for family sets.
Fabric: organic cotton. Ages: newborn–14Y. Price: ~$24–$50.
10. Posh Peanut

Bold, illustrated prints that photograph well, which is why it turns up so often in milestone and newborn photography. The bamboo viscose underneath is soft and drapey; the prints are the reason people choose it.
Fabric: viscose from bamboo. Ages: newborn–5T. Price: ~$28–$46.

Best Functional Design
11. Parade Organics

The double-zipper design is the differentiator, a small practical detail that solves a genuine daily annoyance most brands don’t address.
Fabric: bamboo-cotton blend. Ages: newborn–24M. Price: ~$22–$38.
Best for baby-and-dog families
12. Obi Outfitters (that’s us)

Obi Outfitters homepage showing bamboo baby zipper footies and two-piece sets in seasonal prints
We design baby clothes and matching puppy bandanas in the same prints, so a baby and the family dog can be coordinated without buying from two places. That’s the thing we do that most of the brands above don’t — though we’re not the only ones doing it. Little Sleepies makes pet bandanas matching its pajamas, and it’s on this list at number 8.
Where we differ is that the pet side isn’t an add-on. We build collections around both from the start, and the puppy bandanas are sized and constructed as their own product rather than a scaled-down print run.
We manufacture in our own factory rather than through a third party, which is why our product pages list exact fiber compositions rather than a general fabric description. Our baby pieces are viscose made from bamboo with spandex for stretch.
On certification, so you can compare us like for like with the brands above: our fabric and trim suppliers hold their own certifications, but Obi’s finished garments are not separately certified, so we don’t claim a certification mark on them. And as explained above, bamboo can’t carry GOTS certification — no brand’s can.
Fabric: viscose from bamboo with spandex. Ages: newborn–36M. Price: ~$14–$45.
Honest limitation: our range stops at 36 months, so if you want one brand across a bigger age gap, Primary, Hanna Andersson, or Little Sleepies go much further.

How to choose between them
- Match the certification to the fabric: GOTS for cotton, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 for bamboo. Asking for GOTS bamboo is asking for something that doesn’t exist.
- Buy sleepwear snug: The close fit is the safety mechanism. Sizing up defeats it.
- Think in cost per wear: A $40 piece worn for six months costs less than three $15 pieces outgrown in eight weeks. This is where wide size ranges and stretch fabrics earn their price.
- Don’t over-buy newborn sizes: Most babies are in them briefly, and some skip them.
-
Treat unqualified claims skeptically: “Non-toxic,” “eco-friendly,” and “hypoallergenic” are not regulated terms and mean nothing on their own. A named certification does.

FAQs:
Question: What is the best fabric for baby clothes?
Answer: Organic cotton and viscose made from bamboo are the two most common choices. Cotton is more durable and can be GOTS certified; bamboo viscose is softer and drapes better but is a regenerated fiber and can’t be certified organic. Both are breathable. For either, look for a named certification rather than descriptive language.
Question: Are bamboo clothes safe?
Answer: Yes. The finished fabric is soft and breathable, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 certification confirms it’s been tested against limits for harmful substances in products for babies and toddlers. What bamboo viscose is not is naturally antibacterial or naturally hypoallergenic, those properties belong to the raw plant and don’t survive processing into fabric.
Question: Which brands on this list are GOTS certified?
Answer: Burt’s Bees Baby, L’ovedbaby, Monica + Andy, and Hanna Andersson use GOTS-certified organic cotton. Primary uses organic cotton. The bamboo-based brands, ourselves included, are not GOTS certified and cannot be; GOTS doesn’t apply to regenerated fibers.
Question: How many outfits does a newborn actually need?
Answer: Most parents find 7–10 daily outfits work, depending on laundry frequency. Newborns get through more than you’d expect, but they also outgrow the size fast, so buy fewer in newborn and more in 0–3M.
Question: What should I look for with sensitive or eczema-prone skin?
Answer: Smooth, breathable fabric, tagless construction, and flat seams. Look for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 or GOTS, both of which restrict the dye and finishing chemicals most often linked to skin irritation. If eczema is diagnosed rather than suspected, ask your pediatrician before changing anything; fabric is one factor among several.
Question: What’s a good baby shower gift for a dog owner?
Answer: A matching baby outfit and pet bandana set. Little Sleepies and Obi Outfitters both do these; the sets tend to land well because they include the dog in the announcement photos.
